A rare opener for this gig, Love, segueing neatly into Sulphur, as something different to mark the last night of the UK tour. The otherwise superb mixing desk recording of this performance ends after 45 mins (Hugo forgot to turn the tape over!) and is therefore missing the final two encores. “Treasured memories of this gig. Arriving early meant I got to watch the soundcheck and spend the afternoon and evening with the band and roadies. This was the final night of the October tour, Guy was in a good mood and the rest of the band chatty. They fancied doing something different for the opening song and said I should choose(!). Love, a rarely played b-side at the time, was my suggestion and that was that. The gig was another busy affair; a good crowd, great performance and excellent sound mixing from Dutch engineer Hugo, who kindly recorded the show for me from the desk. After the gig I stupidly turned down an offer to come to Paris the next day for the La Cigale gig with James and Julian Cope – what a shame that I had to be back in Brighton. The tour manager (Andy Jarman) and roadcrew (Rob and Graham) gave me a lift back to London, though I’d missed the last train back to Brighton and had to sleep on a bench in a cold, empty Victoria station. The things we do for music, eh? Oddly, Graham and I met again at the 2016 Amsterdam Paradiso gig for a good old reminisce.” Tim Driver
