An unpublicised gig in the back room of a North London pub to launch the Phil Kaufman Club. Includes an early outing for forthcoming Destroy The Heart b-sides, Mr Jo and Blind.
“On arrival the pub itself was busy enough, but by the time the band took to the stage in the back room and everyone had crammed themselves in on this hot July evening, it got claustrophobic and sweaty. Suddenly the band had got so much more popular since I last saw them – blame John Peel! The music press reviewers were there en masse and, I suspect, a whole load more music biz people. Perhaps it wasn’t such a secret gig after all. Unfortunately there were some technical issues – dicky stage monitors and a generally muddy sound – and Guy’s vocals were too low in the mix. When he came over to say hi afterwards it was clear that the exertion had given him a croaky voice. Just as well he had three weeks off to recover before the all-important Creation Records all dayer in August.” Tim Driver
